Manchester United winger Ashley Young has claimed that he is extremely happy that the team managed to contain the likes of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben when they came up against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Old Trafford.
United were coming into the match as the overwhelming favourites to get beaten quite heavily, as Bayern Munich have been extraordinary this season. Not only have they managed to seal the Bundesliga title with seven matches remaining, but they have also broken numerous records along the way.
They have not suffered a defeat since losing to Arsenal last season in the Champions League. Ahead of the supremacy, the poor form of United this campaign under David Moyes made them favourites to get beaten. However, United rolled back the years by performing exceptionally well against the German outfit to get a 1-1 draw.
As a result, they still remain in the tie and could quite possibly reach the semifinals against all the odds. United could have scored more than one goal if the likes of Danny Welbeck had been more clinical with his finishing.
Nemanja Vidic scored the goal for United from a set piece, while Bastian Schweinsteiger equalised for Bayern Munich. Both Ribery and Robben were kept relatively quiet by a strong United defence.
“I can’t wait to go to Munich. We have given ourselves a massive chance. I think everyone would have taken that result before a ball was kicked. It sets us up nicely for the second leg. It was a great team performance and we look forward to the second leg now. Everybody wrote us off before the game but we created many chances. We know they are a good team but we knew we would get chances on the counter attack. We managed to do that and got the goal,” said Young.
